Monsoon-induced disasters kill 77, injure 88 across Nepal

KATHMANDU, July 9: Since the start of the monsoon this year, a total of 77 people have lost their lives, and 88 have been injured due to monsoon-induced disasters such as floods, landslides, and inundations across various parts of the country.

One person died in the Kathmandu Valley, 18 in Koshi Province, three in Madhesh Province, four in Bagmati Province, 22 in Gandaki Province, 18 in Lumbini Province, and four each in Karnali and Sudurpashchim Provinces, according to Deputy Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki, central spokesperson of the Nepal Police.

Among the injured, three were from the Kathmandu Valley, 21 from Koshi Province, five from Madhesh Province, four from Bagmati Province, 26 from Gandaki Province, four from Lumbini Province, 15 from Karnali Province, and 10 from Sudurpashchim Province.

A total of 53 people were rescued from disaster incidents—41 in Koshi Province and 12 in Gandaki Province.

Additionally, two people went missing in Koshi Province, two in Bagmati Province, and one in Sudurpashchim Province due to disaster-related incidents. Search operations for the missing individuals are ongoing, said police.

In total, 161 houses were waterlogged, while 94 houses, 53 huts, 41 bridges, two government offices, and one school suffered damages due to floods. Furthermore, 335 cattle perished, and 296 families were displaced by disaster-related incidents during this period.

Efforts are underway to relocate families from various districts at risk of floods and landslides to safer locations. The police are also working to resume traffic by clearing landslide debris and conducting necessary repairs and maintenance, according to the Nepal Police Headquarters.
