The monsoon rain that mainly affected the eastern part of the country appeared weak in intensity except in few districts like Taplejung.
According to Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), a weak surge of monsoon has entered Nepal on June 13 with the highest amount of rainfall measuring 129mm recorded in Taplejung."As the monsoon started late, rainfall this year will be comparatively less than the normal times," said Min Kumar Aryal, meteorologist at MFD.
Met forecasters consider June 10 as the date for the onset of monsoon in Nepal. Even last year, monsoon in Nepal was delayed by 10 days, resulting only in 87 percent monsoon rain than normal.
Only a month back, weather experts at an international weather forum had predicted below normal rainfall activity in South Asian countries. Experts have indicated the formation of El Nino condition over the Pacific Ocean behind the weak monsoon in South Asia, including Nepal.
"Like previous years, the prediction has come out to be true. Weak rainfall will be observed at most parts of the country except in the far east and west regions," said Aryal.
MFD considers an average of 1,400 mm of rainfall across the country as standard monsoon rainfall.
"Formation of monsoon clouds is still in premature stage. As for heavy rainfall, locals will need to wait at least 3-4 days for the formation to complete and then precipitate across the country," said Aryal.
