KATHMANDU, May 11: Nepal Weightlifting Association (NWA) is set to host the 19th Youth, 24th Junior Women's, 31st Junior Men's Asian Weightlifting Championships from July 21 to 29.
NWA informed journalists on Thursday that players from 30-35 nations from South Asia, East Asia, Middle East Asia and Central Asia are expected to take part in the competition. During the press meet, it said that number of the players that will take part in the competition is yet to be ascertained.
Participation of a nation and the number of players that will participate in the event will be finalized a month prior to the event, NWA's President Ratan Kumar Tandon.
Nepal to host weightlifting championship
The competition that will be held at the Nepal Army's Physical Training and Sports Complex, Lagankhel, will feature eight groups each from the women's youth, women's junior, men's youth and men's junior categories.
Players will compete for 24 gold each in all women's youth, women's junior, men's youth and men's junior categories in the competition.
Tandon said that the tournament total budget is Rs 175,96,890 of which the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) and the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will bear 15% each. Another 15% of the budget will be allocated from the registration of the participating players. Similarly he also informed that NWA is expecting grant from Nepal Sports Council (NSC) and help from sponsors to cover the budget.
Apart from the sports events, Tandon shared that Asian Weightlifting General Congress and committee's meetings also will be held in the capital along the sidelines.
