KATHMANDU: The govenrment is launching a measles vaccination programme in 46 districts across the country from Saturday.
The campaign aims to vaccinate 30,000 children aged between nine months to five years. According to Dr Babu Ram Marasini, deputy health administrator at the Ministry of Health, the vaccine is effective against almost 90 percent measles-related deaths. Official figures show about 19 percent of the children suffering measles in the country die. The disease turns epidemic every three years. The ministry had conducted similar vaccination campaign in 2004 covering 95,000 children below the age of 15 years.
