According to the Ministry of Education, it has awarded the 50 million-rupee project to the NGO headed by senior Maoist leader Posta Bahadur Bogati. The money will be spent on educating the family members of the “martyrs”.
“As per the decision of the Ministry of Finance, Sahid Pratishtan will implement the project announced in the budget of the current fiscal year,” said Lekh Nath Poudel, spokesperson at the ministry, at a weekly press conference on Monday.
The project is one of the 60 projects under the New Nepal Program of the government.
The ministry took the decision to award the project to the Pratisthan three weeks ago following a directive from the Ministry of Finance.
“The project has now been sent to the National Planning Commission for final approval,” Poudel said.
When asked about the project, Shankar Prasad Adhikari, spokesperson at the Ministry of Finance, was not specific. “The program was mentioned in the budget and the decision was taken accordingly,” said Adhikari.
It may be recalled that it was the Sahid Pratisthan that had recommended to the government a controversial list of over 8,000 martyrs. Maoist ministers had presented the list in the cabinet meeting. The list of martyrs has not yet been made public following protest by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist).
