Sahara Shrestha is one of them.
A graphic designer and photographer based in Brooklyn, New York, Sahara writes an art column called “Paper Plain” for Impose Magazine and a movie column at the 405 Film Club.[break]
After struggling for years, Sahara seems to have finally created a space for herself in the competitive world of creativity. Her works have featured in popular local publications, such as Bushwick Daily, The Bensonhurst Review, Vent Magazine, and The Perspicuity, among others.
And the latest addition to the list is her photos of neon signs published in Bushwick Daily. Sahara has managed to garner readers’ attention of highlighting how the neon signs are gradually coming to an end in the small city of Bushwick in Brooklyn.
“Change is imminent, especially in a place like Brooklyn. In my effort to record time, I took photographs of the neon signs,” the local daily has quoted Sahara as saying. “They serve as markers on a fast-eroding boundary of time, distinguishing older businesses from the new ones. As you near Heavy Woods on Dekalb, a new bar catering to new residents, the neon signs begin to diminish.”
From a writer and office assistant at Wave Magazine in Kathmandu in 2006 to a writer and photographer in a Brooklyn magazine, 26-year-old Sahara definitely has come a long way. She graduated from New York’s Hunter College in Media Studies, and her interest in the arts tends to be multidisciplinary, finding expressions in writing fiction as much as in creating online experiences.
She is presently working on a new collection of collages, as she is interested in exploring the themes of identity, change, and struggle, with an eye on the visual aspect of things.
