The three-day event will see the participation of 399 players from 19 teams, who will be vying for 19 gold medals, according to Dawa Gurung, president of Nepal Sito-Ryu Karate Association.[break]
Gurung further said that the association is planning to organize an international tournament in Lumbini.
“Organizing a tournament in this holy land will give a good message to the international community. That´s the reason why we are planning to hold an international tournament in the future,” said Gurung.
The tournament, which is being organized with the support from National Sports Council and Lumbini Development Trust, will be helpful in producing new players, according to the organizing committee´s publicity coordinator Deepak Shrestha.
Players representing 14 zones, Nepal Police Club, Tribhuvan Army Club, APF Club, University team and the national team will take part in the championship. The players of the national team includes 12 players currently undergoing Mission SAG training.
The men´s section will include competitions in 50 kg, 55 kg, 60 kg, 67 kg, 75 kg, 84 kg and above 84 kg weight categories as well as team fight (kumite) event.
Meanwhile, the women´s category includes competitions in 45 kg, 50 kg, 55 kg, 61 kg, 68 kg, above 68 kg and team fight event.
The tournament also features singles and team katas in both men´s and women´s sections.
The cost of the tournament is estimated to be Rs 2.9 million.
