The private hospital where 21-year-old Sabina Koirala, who was in the third month of her pregnancy, died Wednesday night remained tense all throughout the day on Thursday after the locals encircled and ransacked the hospital accusing the doctors of negligence in treatment.[break]
According to Bimal Koirala, Sabina´s husband, he took his wife to Suraksha Hospital after she complained of pain in her belly Wednesday night. "My wife used to visit the hospital for regular pregnancy tests," he said. He accused the doctors of not providing medical treatment to his wife on time.
Sabina´s irate relatives vandalized the office of Dr Rambha Dev, the head of the hospital. In response, police used force and thrashed Bimal and Sabina´s brother Raj Kumar. Enraged by police act, Sabina´s relatives joined by dozens of other local people tried to overrun the hospital Thursday.
After the locals shouted slogans demanding a fair probe into Sabina´s death, police took Dr Dev under control. "We took Dr Dev under out control to pacify the irate mob and avert further damage to the hospital," said DSP Dipak Pokharel.
As police took Dr Dev under control, the locals tried to attack the police van as well. They hurled water bottles targeting Dr Dev. Police had to provide heavy security to escort Dr Dev out of the hospital compound.
The locals claim five pregnant women have died in the course of treatment at Suraksha Hospital this year alone.
