 Around National College, Baluwatar

KATHMANDU, Jan 23:
Most conversations that people bond through usually take place over a cup of coffee, plates of momos or a late-night dinner. In college life, eateries around colleges play an integral part in making friends, whether it’s to catch up with who scored higher in the term papers during lunch breaks or to copy homework or just to hang around after college is over.

This week, we list a few college eateries that the students of National College at Baluwatar are familiar with. Many different varieties of food items are available in these places at very reasonable and affordable prices. That’s why students rush to reserve tables for their groups without giving a second thought to what they want to eat, and without hesitating to order the same thing everyday.

European Bakery

The bakery famous for their patties, potato rolls, garlic breads, cheese puffs and éclairs is located a little further from National College, after the second turn on the right. The bakery is open all week except on Sundays and sells different varieties of breads, cereals, cookies, pastries, doughnuts, Swiss Rolls and homemade pickles. Ask anyone for the directions and you’ll get it.

Baluwatar Café

It’s located by the turn that leads to European Bakery. This place is famous among students for ‘alu chops’ apart from chowmein, alu sticks, mo:mos. The ‘achhar’ that comes with alu chops and slightly oily but delectable chowmein served in ‘tapari’ (leaf plates) is everybody’s favorite.

“Alu Chana Didi”

The small shop opposite European bakery is commonly referred to as ‘Alu Chana Pasal’ or the ‘Alu Chana Didi.’ The place is famous for ‘aluko tarkari’ with ‘chiura’ (beaten rice) and ‘chana tarkari,’ and you can always ask for chilies and onions.

Moonlight

This place serves oily parathas or alu naan with tomato pickle on a small plate. Other items include momos, fried rice, chowmein and ‘chhole bhature.’ The cheerful auntie there usually listens to students’ conversations and doesn’t hesitate to give a piece of her mind. Apart from the foods there, it’s her presence that many students enjoy. Moonlight is located on the left turn from the uphill near European Bakery and Alu Chana Didi.

A one

A One serves everything that a restaurant’s menu includes. A little ahead on the right from National College, A one is a restaurant that can easily accommodate many groups of college students.

Coffee Time Café

Coffee Time is next to A One, and although the prices there are slightly more expensive (compared to those of other places we’ve included in this list), the café, as its name suggests, serves varieties of coffee, and you get free Wi-Fi too!
