Literature to bring Nepalis & Indians closer

KATHMANDU, Feb 4: Nepal and India have shared centuries of cultural, social and historical ties, and to further enhance the close and friendly ties between the peoples of the two countries, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Nepal Academy and Bhartiya Sahitya Academy on Thursday at a ceremony held at Nepal Academy, Kamaladi.



Ganga Prasad Uprety, Vice Chancellor, Nepal Academy and Dr. Viswanath Prasad Tiwari, Vice Chairman, Bhartiya Sahitya Academy, signed the MOU in the presence of Bairagi Kainla, Chancellor, Nepal Academy, at Nepal Academy.[break]



Present at the occasion was Indian Ambassador to Nepal HE Jayant Prasad.



The MOU states that various literary activities and cultural exchange programs will be organized to further enhance mutual understanding and friendly relationship between the academicians of the two countries.







According to the agreement, the Nepal Academy and Bharatiya Sahitya Academy of India have expressed mutual commitment to promote creative literary works by translating and publishing books on language, literature, culture, philosophy and social sciences of both countries.



It also stipulates on organizing regular seminars and symposia, carry exchange programs for enhancing the relationship between the intellectuals and organizations, and organize visits of intellectuals and academicians related to language, literature, culture, philosophy and social science.



Following the signing of MOU, a two-day symposium on Common Languages and Literature of Nepal and India is being held at Nepal Academy on February 3 and 4.



The second day of the symposium, chaired by Jeevan Namdung, India will see presentation on Limbu and Avadhi languages by participants from both the countries.



An institution with 55 years of history, Nepal Academy focuses on four major areas – languages, literature, cultures, social sciences, and philosophy.



Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, established in 1954, is the central institution for literary dialogues, publication and promotion in the country and the only institution that undertakes literary activities in twenty-four Indian languages, including English.
