BIRATNAGAR, Oct 7: Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki of Koshi Province has resigned from his post. Addressing the Provincial Assembly meeting on Saturday, Chief Minister Karki announced his resignation.

Speaking at the Provincial Assembly meeting, Karki mentioned that the country's political and economic situation necessitated unity among all parties. He argued that since none of the parties holds a majority in the Provincial Assembly, it is necessary to form a coalition government in Koshi province.

He further emphasized that if all parties remain steadfast in their positions, a mid-term election needs to be held. However, Chief Minister Karki clarified that a mid-term poll is not necessary at the moment, stating that UML is prepared for a consensus government. "UML is ready for consensus and cooperation," he said, informing the Provincial Assembly that he would submit his resignation to the Provincial Chief today itself.

Chief Minister Karki was scheduled to undergo a vote of confidence in today's Provincial Assembly meeting. However, he chose to step down from the post, understanding that he would not be able to secure the required majority of seats in the Provincial Assembly.

Chief Minister Karki had earlier taken the oath of office and secrecy on September 8.
