According to Parsuram Kharel, Professor at Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tribhuwan University (TU), while opting for Journalism as a career, first of all the core aspect is to have command over the language.
Besides that one should also have adequate knowledge of relevant topics.

Moreover a journalist should be capable enough to carry out the work of a reporter, be an editor in times of need, and should strike a balance between the two. He/she should always be up to date with current affairs and be ever ready to venture to the field.
Kharel further says that for broadcast journalism, an individual should have good command over spoken English. But it also depends on whether the aspirant will practice journalism in English otherwise the same applies for Nepali language as well.
He points out that if a person is pursuing his/her career in Journalism for English newspapers or broadcast, it will provide tremendous opportunity since the demand for the same is very high.
A journalist, although focusing and specializing on a special beat should also be a generalist and have knowledge about various other factors as well.
Finally he/she should be able to work at odd hours and meet the deadlines.
If a person can meet up these criteria, then he can definitely enter the field of journalism and aspire to be a journalist opines Kharel.
He further explains that although there is tough competition in this field, a journalist should be able to stand out.
The aspirant should acquire enough skills and qualifications that give him/her the ability to maintain a set standard regarding media content.
“Moreover, if a person ventures into the field of journalism, the skills and knowledge he has will definitely help him in other arenas as well. Lastly while trying to be a journalist always read, listens and watch,” adds Kharel.
