KATHMANDU, March 6: The government of Japan handed over Rs 234.4 million worth of rice grains to Nepal on Friday, for it to be supplied to the needy population living in the food deficit districts.
According to a statement issued by the Embassy of Japan, Ambassador Tatsuo Mizuno attended a hand over ceremony organized at the premises of Nepal Food Corporation.

"A total of 7,101 metric tons (MT) of rice procured under Food Aid 2007, safely arrived from Japan in December of last year," said the statement, adding that this huge volume of rice has already been transported to Kathmandu (20 percent), Birgunj (20 percent), Nepalgunj (20 percent) and Surkhet (40 percent) respectively.
"Nepal Food Corporation is to be responsible for its transportation and distribution of rice from these cities, to the food deficit areas in the hilly and mountainous regions of Nepal."
As of fiscal year 2007, Japan has extended cumulatively food aid to Nepal totaling 91,732 metric tons of rice and 24,300 metric tons of wheat, worth approximately 7.4 billion Japanese yen, said the statement.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ambassador Mizuno expressed his belief that the rice will help to ease the problem of food shortages.
