JANAKPURDHAM, Oct 11: Janakpurdham is being ugly as no proper garbage management has been done in the historical, religious and tourism town which transacts more than 250 million rupees annually.

The capital of the ancient Mithila kingdom of Rajarshi Janak, the birthplace of Sita, the spouse of Lord Ram, and a religious shrine where more than 700,000 people visit annually seems filthy for lack of proper attention on its cleanliness and the beauty of the city has been deteriorating day by day. Some 80 percent tourists come from Calcutta, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and UP of India and but when they see the unmanaged drainages and pot holes on the street, their enthusiasm dies down.

Janakpur is a better pilgrimage than many other pilgrimage sites in India, one Mk Yadav of Chhattisgarh India says, but adds- this city is more stinking as there is garbage everywhere.

Important tourism sites in Janakpur are Janaki temple, Ram Mandir, Naulakha Mandir, Janak Temple, Laxman Temple, Rangamukhi grounds, Barabigha grounds and historical ponds, which attract hundreds of thousands of tourists.

Janakpur town produces 17 tons of garbage every day but it is not managed well.

The town faces lack of dumping site, said Executive Officer of the Municipality Badri Krishna Shankhadev.

Ten years ago, the town looked like a heaven, but its beauty has deteriorated for the past few years, said JCCI Chairman Shyam Prasad Saha.

We are hoping that one day the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will come for the town´s rescue, as garbage is the main problem for the tourists here, people of Janakpur say.

The people of Janakpur demand that exemption of customs duty should be given to Indian vehicles which come with Indian tourists, if we are to develop Janakpur as a religious tourism destination.

Towns people demand that the town should be kept clean during tourist season as tourists come to Janakpur generally from September to December. RSS
