Janakpur journos launching strike over comrade`s death

BIRGUNJ, Jan 12: Journalists in Janakpur are preparing to launch an "indefinite" strike over the killing of journalist Uma Singh on Sunday night.



An emergency meeting of journalists here Monday has demanded that the Home and Information and Communications ministers resign over the killing, Singh be declared martyr and the attackers arrested and punished.



Ajit Tiwari, secretary of Dhanusha district chapter of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) said the journalists will continue their strike until their demands are met.






All six FMs in the district have decided not to air any news except Singh’s. Similarly, local daily newspapers have decided to carry only the news related to Singh and leave the rest of the space in the newspapers blank.



At the request of the journalists, Janakpur unit of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce has called on all the businesses in the town to down their shutters Monday, according to journalist Suresh Yadav.
