CHITWAN, June 18: An investigation by the parliament´s Natural Resources and Means Committee into the killings of rhinos in Chitwan National Park (CNP) has concluded that an international racket of smugglers are involved.

The 11-member probe committee has also pinpointed flaws in National Parks and Wild Life Conservation Act-1973 as another vital reason behind the serial killing of rhinos. However, the committee members denied to divulge their findings.

"We will recommend to the government necessary measures that need to be taken to protect rhinos from the clutches of poachers," Laxman Ghimire, one of the committee members, said.

The parliamentary committee, which arrived in Chitwan on June 16, had met CNP officials, conservation activists, locals and other stakeholders in the course of their investigation. Eight rhinos have been found dead in CNP during the past two months alone.
