In Nepal, too, labor unions and organizations have planned various programs to mark the occasion.
International Workers' Day is observed worldwide in memory of the labor movement that began in Chicago, USA, in 1886 under the slogan “Eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.”
During that movement, a bomb exploded at a place called Haymarket in Chicago. Although the person responsible for the bombing was never identified, the police brutally suppressed the protesting workers. Seven workers were killed in a police firing. Despite the suppression, the labor movement eventually achieved success.
In 1889, a meeting of international labor organizations and labor leaders held in Paris, France, decided to observe May 1 as International Workers' Day every year. Since then, the day has been celebrated annually on May 1.
