In this connection, Indian ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood, handed over a cheque equivalent to the aid to Bal Krishna Khand, the minister for irrigation, on Friday. [break]
The work is being undertaken in accordance with the decisions made by the Nepal-India Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management. India has been providing assistance to Nepal for strengthening and extension of embankments along the rivers for flood protection in both the countries.
A press release issued by the embassy said that with the latest assistance, the total grant assistance already disbursed for embankment construction along these rivers stands at NRs 1,477.99 million, of which NRs 531.5 million was released in 2009 and NRs 599.78 million has been released till date.
India is also providing grant assistance for river training works along Gagan, Trijuga, Lakhandei, Sunsari and Kankai rivers in Nepal amounting to NRs 195.21 million, the statement added.
Swiss aid for roads
The Swiss government has pledged grant assistance of Swiss Francs 12.716 million for the District Roads Support Project - Phase IV. The assistance will be used to construct 100 kilometers of new roads and upgrade and maintain 50 km of roads in Okhaldhunga, Sindhuli, Ramechhap and Khotang.
Finance Secretary Rameshore Prasad Khanal and Charge d´ affaires at the Swiss embassy Elisabeth von Capeller signed an agreement to this effect on Friday. The assistance will also emphasize on routine maintenance of 210 km of existing but prioritized roads.
"This collaboration will generate 1.6 million person days of employment out of which over a million person days will be targeted to benefit the disadvantaged groups," states a press release issued by the embassy.
