KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Nepal has received permission to import 200,000 tons of wheat from India. The Government of India has approved the export of 200,000 tons of wheat to Nepal. This approval has been issued when there is a ban on wheat export in India.
According to the circular dispatched by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on Saturday, this export will be done through the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL).
50,000 metric tons of wheat required to address shortage
Although India has banned wheat export to other countries to maintain the domestic supply, the government has allowed export in response to the requests of certain countries, keeping in mind the necessity of food security. The Government of India has taken this step in light of the food security of Nepal. Under this exemption, wheat is exported especially to the concerned country when it needs it.
The government of India banned the export of wheat in May 2022 after the wheat production decreased due to adverse weather. Although India is not a major exporter of wheat, this move has destabilized the world market. India is the second largest producer of wheat in the world. However, its share in the global wheat trade is less than 1 percent. The government reserves a large part of the wheat production to provide subsidized food to the poor in the country.
