ILAM, May 5: "Stop, I said, stop," Chief District Officer (CDO) Basudev Dahal, was seen shouting at someone over the phone on Friday. "There is no need of raising funds at this devastating moment."

CDO Dahal has stopped fundraising activities that were randomly being organized in various parts of the district following the deadly earthquake.

Dahal, who himself is chief of District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC), said the DDRC has decided not to let any individual or organization raise funds for the earthquake victims in the district. Such a decision has been made upon instructions from the home ministry.According to the District Administration Office (DAO), Ilam, no one has been allowed to randomly raise relief funds for the quake victims.

"Funds raised in the name of earthquake victims are most likely to be misused, so we decided to prohibit such activities," CDO Dahal informed.

Social organizations, professional associations and clubs raising relief funds and materials in the district have been ordered by the DAO to stop their campaign. However, a handful of organizations that had made commitment to collect food and water for quake victims have been allowed to carry on their activities.

Nepal Students' Union, All Nepal Free Students' Union and Bhajuratna Tol Bikash Sanstha have been allowed to collect biscuits, noodles and water. Likewise, the cloth bank of Youth Initiative has also been permitted to collect old clothes for the victims.

After the government issued a directive for transferring all the funds raised via bank accounts to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, those who were proactively collecting relief materials for flood victims have now become inactive.
