KATHMANDU, April 22: The number of people leaving Kathmandu for their villages has spiked as the nationwide lockdown has left people without work and money in the city.

Thousands flocked to Jadibuti, Lokanthali and Kaushaltar in Bhaktapur on Wednesday to make their way to Sindhuli, Ramechhap, Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk.

According to passengers, local authorities of Dolakha and Ramechhap arranged vehicles for them. Others, however, came there with the hope that they might get vehicles to go home. “I read in the news yesterday, and came here,” said a man in the crowd, adding that lockdown has hit their lives hard and they will not return until the situation is normal.

Although the government has imposed lockdown to maintain physical distance and avoid contacts among the people, the scene in Bhaktapur was alarming. Security personnel were struggling to manage the crowd and requested people to maintain social distance, however, no one was in a mood to listen.
