KATHMANDU, Jan 7: The government has scrapped the appointment of new priests at the Pashupatinath Temple.

The government has also asked the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) to recommend new names as per the traditions and rules of the trust, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal told the parliament Wednesday evening. PM Dahal is the patron of the Trust.

As the Constituent Assembly meeting resumed after ten continuous postponements in the past three weeks, the prime minister said he took the decision following concerns raised by various sections of the society including those from India.

He said he had accepted the resignation of the priests and requested them to continue the daily rituals as usual until the new priests are appointed.

“We have also instructed the PADT to make necessary arrangement for unhindered performing of the pooja at the temple. Dahal also urged all to help maintain centuries-old tradition of religious tolerance and harmony.
