“We have forwarded the proposals to the Finance Ministry. We have also requested the ministry to arrange fund from donors to carry out feasibility study of the projects,” Tulsi Prasad Sitaula, joint secretary at the MoPPW, told Republica on Sunday.
MoPPW has proposed construction of tunnels from Tokha of Kathmandu to Chhahare of Nuwakot of Kathmandu-Nuwakot road and Nagdhunga to Khatripauwa on Kathmandu-Naubise road.
The Tokha-Chhahare tunnel will be 8 km long, while the Nagdhunga-Khatripauwa road will be 2.4 km long.
“We expect significant reduction in travel time once the construction is complete,” Sitaula added.
The MoPPW has also informed the Finance Ministry about the benefits of the tunnels in terms of fuel and travel time.
Sitaula said at least Rs 600 to Rs 700 million per km will be required to build the tunnels.
“We can complete construction in two years if fund is made available on time,” he added.
