KATHMANDU, Feb 17: The government has decided to move ahead with the process of releasing MP Arun Kumar Chaudhary of Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP). The Council of Ministers has sent the files of MP Chaudhary to the President's Office, seeking clemency for the NUP lawmaker.

Earlier, based on the opinion of the Office of the Attorney General, the Ministry of Home Affairs had sent the file for executive clemency to the Cabinet. The Council of Ministers has already decided to send the file to the President's Office.

The final decision regarding executive clemency is made by the President.

The President's Office is pardoning the imprisonment of some well-behaving prisoners on the occasion of National Democracy Day on February 19. As soon as MP Chaudhary is freed from prison, he will be able to take on the responsibilities of MP.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has started the process of remission of sentence according to the National Civil Code Procedure Act, 2074 BS (2017). Chaudhary, an elected MP from Kailali-2, was sentenced to six months imprisonment for torching a tractor. He was arrested recently after he became an MP.
