KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Ending long-standing controversy surrounding the printing of the machine readable passport (MRP), the government finally sealed a procurement deal with French security printer Oberthur Technologies on Friday evening.

The official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and representative from Oberthur signed an agreement, reported our correspondent Kiran Chapagain.[break]

The deal was supposed to be signed much earlier but it was delayed as Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala declined to approve the design accusing officials of her ministry of keeping her in dark while selecting the printer.

The cabinet on Thursday night approved the design and included the decision on the minute dated August 13, the day when the cabinet authorized the prime minister to end the design row.
