Govt launches campaign to eradicate elephantitis

KATHMANDU, Jan 31: The Health Ministry started on Saturday the first phase of national campaign to cure elephantitis, by distributing free medicines in eight districts.



According to state-owned Radio Nepal, the two-day campaign will cover eight districts – Makwanpur, Chitwan, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Tanahun, Syangja, Palpa and Nuwakot.

Medics, health workers and volunteers deployed by the ministry go door-to-door distributing medicines to the people affected by the disease caused by mosquitoes.


The radio quoted officials at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division as saying that the health workers started their work at 10 am on Friday and will complete their work by the end-of-business on Sunday.


The Ministry, which has mobilised 4000 health workers and volunteers to execute the task, has planned to cover 20 districts during the fiscal year 2008/09. The remaining 12 districts will be covered in the second phase on February 7 and 8.
