Govt, Kirant workers agree on 5 points

KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Negotiation teams of the government and the Kirant Janabadi Workers Party (KJWP), an armed group operating in the eastern hills, agreed on five points on Sunday, according to state-owned Nepal Television.



During the talks between the two sides in eastern town of Dharan, the government side led by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Janardan Sharma agreed to ensure security of all KJWP leaders involved in the negotiations, besides agreeing to treat all its leaders and cadres politically.

The KJWP has agreed to halt all its military offensives and promised not to carry out any activity prohibited by the law. According to the agreement, the government will start releasing gradually all detained leaders and cadres of the group. The party has given a list of six detained leaders for their release, according to the TV channel. "The government is very positive about fulfilling some of the demands immediately," Minister Sharma told journalists, following the talks.


Ananta Kranti, Coordinator of the group, said his party wants a fully proportional system of election. Other members of the KJWP talks team included Pampha Kiranti, Suman Bantawa, Anehang Limbu and Mina Khambu. The party has submitted its 29 demands to the government.


The government team included Minister Sharma and Local Development Minister Ram Chandra Jha. The talks also saw the participation of military analyst Indrajit Rai and parliamentarian Sudhan Rai as facilitators.


The KJWP, which went underground immediately after the Constituent Assembly election, said it has two military wings – Limbuwan and Khumbuwan. During Sunday´s talks, the venue was guarded by uniformed members of the armed group.
