BIRGANJ, May 3: A government-owned excavator at Regional Irrigation Management Division in Birgunj is being misused for the personal benefit of staffers.

The excavator has been leased out to a private contractor without permission from the Department of Irrigation (DoI). The division offices are required to seek prior approval of the DoI to hire out excavator to private contractors. [break]

The excavator was hired out for Rs 12,600 per day since April 10, but the contractors have been paying Rs 4,500 per hour. As the contractors have been using the excavator for 10 hours a day, the staffers of the division office have been making an illegal profit of Rs 12,000.

The excavator is being used to dig a private pond for one Chandand Singh of Piparadi-2.

“We don´t have any ill-intension to illegally earn money. We will make corrections in the contract paper,” said Gaurishankar Pathak, an official at the division office.
