Good old NPP, bakeries and khaja ghar

KATHMANDU, Feb 6: The fun of being a college student comes with longer lunch breaks and hanging out at local food joints. Almost every house on Jhamsikhel’s lane has a restaurant, popular in its own right - great food quality, service standards and hence, expensive.

College students of the area, however, don’t frequent these places. There are other small food joints that serve food at a price so reasonable that every college student can afford to eat their almost every day.

This week, we list a few college eateries that the students of St Mary’s College in Jawalakhel are familiar with.

NPP

Good old NPP has a lot of items on its menu, but regular customers order stick food like sausage, momo, tofu, deep fried mushroom and alu which it is famous for. MPP was previously located opposite to the Vesper Café, and now it’s right beside the main road, next to Human Tailors and just ahead of the fire-brigade.

Newari Khaja Pasal

A little ahead of the main entrance of the zoo, beside the zoo parking lot/Sundae cafe, this small Newari khaja ghar serves a complete khaja set for just Rs 50. Newari delicacies like choila, pangra, sekuwa, momocha and bhutun are available here. Perfect for college goers!

Bakery at Saleways

Located just beside the parking lot of Saleways, it offers regular bakery items like cinnamon rolls, cookies, pastries and patties. You also get instant tea and coffee to go with the bakery items. What more can you ask for?

Golden Dragon Restaurant

Golden Dragon, fondly referred to as just ‘dragon’, is on the right side of the road leading to Saleways, in front of the fire brigade. The restaurant is on the first floor of the second building and it might be a little confusing for first timers to figure out where the staircase is. Like any other restaurant, the menu comprises of fried rice, momo, chopsuey, chowmein but they serve a bowl of complementary soup that most students are greedy for.

Café Hessed

Located on the building right next to Vesper Café, Hessed needs no introduction. Doughnuts and muffins there are delicious and not at all expensive given the quality. Free WiFi but you have to order a drink for the password, they apparently change it everyday.

German Bakery

This is more of a take-away shop so hanging out with a group might not be a viable option here since there are just two benches inside and the bakery is located by the main road, right outside is your footpath with people passing by. Famous for potato rolls, mini pizzas, croissants, walnut cakes, muffins, pumpernickel bread and (yummy) cinnamon roll, German Bakery is just beside Hallmark Card & Gift Shop in Jawalakhel.
