Lok Darshan Regmi, secretary at the Ministry of Finance and German ambassador Matthias Meyer signed an agreement to this effect on behalf of their respective governments on Monday.On the occasion, Meyer expressed concern over the impact of current border disruptions which has hit the people in the earthquake-affected districts and the poor population hard. Urging all sides to engage in peaceful dialogue and immediately end the border disruptions, he also asked Nepal to provide the institutional mechanism -- National Reconstruction Authority - for effective implementation of post-quake reconstruction works.
Issuing a press release, German Embassy in Kathmandu said the assistance comprises of two programs -- Financial Cooperation Recovery Program of 25 million euros and Reconstruction Programme of 5 million euros.The recovery program will focus on reconstruction of district hospitals severely damaged by the earthquake and the rural energy distribution networks. In addition, substantial support under this program will be directed towards rehabilitation of cultural heritage sites, schools and roads in the city of Bhaktapur, the release added.
While the German Development Bank-KfW on behalf of the German government will implement the first program, the German Agency for International Cooperation will be responsible for the second project, the release said, adding that the German government has committed 35 million euros in total for immediate humanitarian relief and rehabilitation measures following the devastating earthquakes. "In addition, more than 60 million euros worth of private donations was mobilized in Germany by different non-government organizations (NGOs), highlighting the particularly close relations and solidarity between the two countries," the release added.
