SAPTARI, May 19: A woman has been elected the mayor for the first time in Saptari district. Geeta Chaudhary of the Nepali Congress has been elected the mayor of the Surunga Municipality by securing 7,292 votes in the local level election held on May 13.
Her closest contender Ram Narayan Chaudhary of the CPN (Unified Socialist) got 4,217 votes.
With this, the Nepali Congress has won the mayor/chief post in four and the deputy mayor/vice chair post in six local bodies of the district.
As per the results of the vote count available so far, in the 10 local bodies of Saptari district, Nepali Congress has won in four, the UML in two and the Janata Samajbadi Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, the Janamat Party and the CPN (Unified Socialist) have won one local body each.
