Fundamental human rights of quake victims at risk: NHRC

KATHMANDU, June 19: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has made public a report stating that the fundamental human right of the earthquake victims is at risk.



The report prepared by a high-level committee led by the NHRC member Govinda Sharma after monitoring in Gorkha, Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts stated that the earthquake victims are at risk.



The report states that the earthquake victims in affected districts are still living in makeshift tents, victims in Gorkha have not received Rs 15,000 provided by the government and there are errors in data collected by engineers of Central Bureau of Statistics among others.



The report prepared by the human right body further states that there was vacuum of employees at local bodies, lack of coordination among National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), District Natural Disaster Relief Committee and District Development Committee.

The report has requested the government to implement after preparing projects for relocating the settlements at risk, make necessary arrangements for local election and make works of NRA and its local offices more efficient among others.
