KATHMANDU, Feb 29: Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new building of the Supreme Court as the court's main building was rendered vulnerable by the earthquake last year. Since the earthquake, the court has been conducting benches at its annex building in a congested environment.
The new annex building will be constructed in the Singha Durbar premises that lies at the back of the existing main building of the court.
Foundation stone laid for 40-MW Upper Chameliya project
According to the Supreme Court Spokesperson Nahakul Subedi, the government on May 8, 2014 had provided two plots of land within the Singha Durbar premises to the Supreme Court for constructing new buildings.
According to Subedi, the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction has sanctioned Rs 92.6 million for the construction of the new annex building and Gauri Parbati Construction Service Pvt Ltd has been awarded a contract of Rs 77.9 million to complete the building within a year.
Supreme Court Registrar Shreekanta Paudel informed that the new building will be constructed following earthquake resilient technology.
