Issuing a press statement on Friday, Nepal´s Permanent Mission in Geneva said that during the meeting Minister Ghimire appreciated the contributions made by the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal. [break]
"He reiterated the commitment of the Government of Nepal regarding constructive engagement with the international human rights mechanisms. Expressing thanks for the cooperation of the OHCHR in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process of Nepal, he informed Pillay of various steps taken by Nepal government for the implementation of the UPR recommendations and voluntary commitments," reads a statement.
During the meeting Minister Ghimire said Nepal was currently focusing on strengthening the capacity of national institutions to enhance sustainable national capacity. Pillay appreciated the support of the Nepal government the OHCHR’s Nepal office during its operations. She expressed hope that mutual engagement would be more strengthened in future.
"Both sides also discussed about the upcoming Constituent Assembly elections in Nepal and various other aspects of promotion and protection of human rights," the statement said. Meanwhile, Minister Ghimire held a separate meeting with Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Francis Gurry in Geneva.
During the meeting, Minister Ghimire, appreciated the way WIPO had been pursuing the development agenda and said that more efforts were necessary to help the countries like Nepal enhance their capacity to innovate.
"He highlighted the groundwork the Government of Nepal was doing to formulate an integrated national IP policy, establish an IP management office and identify and prioritize important IP areas for better coherence and coordination," the statement said. Francis commended efforts of the Government of Nepal in formulating, revising and modernizing the legal and institutional frameworks on IP during the meeting.
"He said that the key approach should be to promote and strengthen coordination among different government agencies and build partnerships with all stakeholders. He also underscored the progress made in the ongoing negotiations on TKGRF and said that more political will especially from the developed countries was required for the successful conclusion of the treaty," reads the statement.
