KATHMANDU, Nov 6: Flower sales worth Rs 500 million were recorded during Tihar. The highest consumption of flowers was in the Kathmandu Valley.

According to Dilip Bade, president of the Floriculture Association Nepal, flower sales this year have been similar to last year's figures. This year, consumers generally had to pay Rs 100 for a single garland.

He stated that this year’s flower sales were made easier due to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) designating specific sales locations. This year, the KMC had designated 46 places for Nepali flower farmers to sell their flowers.

Demand for flowers in the market grows by 15 to 20 percent annually, while production increases by only a maximum of 10 percent. Although domestic production typically meets the demand for marigold and Godawari flowers used during Tihar, there is still a need to import chrysanthemums and red roses from India, according to Bade.

Floriculture has expanded to 52 districts, including the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley, as well as Kaski, Chitwan, Makwanpur, Kavrepalanchok, Gulmi, Palpa, Dhading, and Morang.

Bade further shared that flowers of 450 different varieties are being commercially produced in Nepal. More than 44,000 people have benefited from floriculture, with 1,184 entrepreneurs cultivating flowers across 221 hectares of land.
