A flooding in the local Khutiya River on August 16 swept away the Kamaiya settlement in Dhanchaur of Baladevi VDC in Kailali and displaced dozens of families.[break]
Jugmani lost his seven-year-old son along with house. Rendered homeless and penniless many of these Kamaiyas including Jug Mani have returned to their former life of bondage.
"Everything vanished in a moment. We are back to where we used to be," said Jugmani.
Altogether 65 Kamaiya families had resettled in Dhanchaur and many of them now work at their former masters´ houses while some have left for India and some are living on the roadside, Jugmani said.
To address their vulnerable situation, Dhanchauri Freed Kamaiya Struggle Committee held a press meet in Dhanagadi on Thursday. The committee called for immediate resettlement arrangement for the flood-hit former Kamaiyas
