KATHMANDU, Feb 15: Five Nepali laborers were among six killed in a landslide in Kinnaur of Himanchal Paresh of India on Sunday, according to reports.

They died while 14 others were injured when a landslide washed out temporary sheds of the laborers working for the Jaypee Group’s 1,000MW Karcham-Wangtoo Hydropower Project, The Tribune reported.[break]

Nepalis killed in the incident were identified as Dil Bahadur, Zor Bahadur Sunar, Sher Bahadur and Bale Tamang and Babloo.

Superintendent of Police (SP) YS Pathania told the Indian Express that 45 were living in the sheds and two are still missing.

“The incident occurred at 7:45 a.m. when many laborers were asleep,” Pathania added. “So far, this cannot be linked to tremors due to blasting at the hydropower site. It seems that after the recent rain and snowfall at the higher reaches, the boulders on the hills above the project site became loose and rolled down.”

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Nichar sub-division of Kinnaur, announced an ex gratia of Rs 10,000 to the family of the deceased and Rs 5,000 for the injured.
