PARSA, Birgunj, April 20: Life in Birgunj, the headquarters of Parsa district, has been affected since Tuesday morning due to the banda or shutdown imposed by farmers who have been calling for compensation after the failure of the maize crop.

The farmers had used the seeds provided by the district agricultural office and they complain that the seeds produced barren corn cobs.[break]

Farmers held a demonstration rally at the main crossroad in Birgunj this morning which resulted in obstruction of traffic movement. Market, educational institutions, transport and factories have been affected by the Banda.

Maize farmers in the district are waging phase-wise movement demanding adequate compensation for the failure in the maize crop. In this connection, they have called for a day-long banda in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts today.
