On June 23, up to 48 locals of different VDCs in the district had undergone cataract surgery at the eye hospital. Of those operated on, 13 have been complaining of acute headache, nausea and blurred vision and their eyes have swollen up seriously. Likewise, Tika Devi Poudel and Bhawani Prasad Dahal of Sundarpur-8 and Muga Lal Chaudhari of Dulari-3 each lost one of their eyes following the surgeries.

Pradhan informed that the hospital has already provided the medical expenses of three of those ailing. He said another nine patients who are suffering from eye infection after the surgeries are in touch with the hospital, which will bear their medical expenses as well.

“Yes, the nine patients are suffering from eye infection following surgery. But none of them needs to have their eyes removed due to infection,” he said.

Meanwhile, Morang District Administration Office has started an investigation into the loss of eyesight by three persons after cataract surgery at the hospital.

Chief District Officer Ganesh Bahadur Karki said the DAO had asked for clarifications from the hospital regarding the case and the hospital has already submitted the clarifications.

In its clarifications, the hospital has stated that doctors removed the eyes of three patients following post-surgery infection, said Karki, adding, “The hospital says they removed the eyes as infection persisted even almost a month after surgery.”

On August 3, Bhawani Prasad´s family had carried out his baitarni (pre-death) rites after the pain in one of his eyes became almost unbearable. Likewise, Tika Devi, 72, is currently at Tilganga Eye Hospital in Kathmandu for treatment following the faulty cataract surgery.
