CHITWAN, April 12: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi suggested on Monday to either extend the term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) or to hold fresh election if the CA failed to promulgate new constitution by May 28 deadline.

He said seeking a way out of the ongoing political deadlock by making amendment in the interim constitution has become essential. [break]

Nidhi claimed that the UCPN (Maoist) party should be blamed for CA´s failure in producing new constitution on time.

"The Maoists have not taken sincere initiatives toward fulfilling their past commitments in practice in connection of resolving the issue of Maoist combatants, disbanding the paramilitary structure of its youth wing YCL and returning public as well as private properties confiscated during the insurgency period," Nidhi told reporters.

He further said serious differences over some major issues that surfaced among the political parties were creating problems in expediting the constitution writing process. "Electoral system, pluralism in the parliament and state restructuring are some of the major roadblocks in the statute drafting process," he said.

He accused Maoists of engaging themselves in power politics while the CA is short of time to finish the statute.
