CHITWAN, March 12: The district level examination board in Chitwan on Thursday postponed the district level school examinations of grade eight scheduled for Friday due to banda (general strike) called by agitating Tharu communities in Tarai districts.[break]
A meeting of the board held on Thursday morning decided to hold the examinations of English subject for the grade eight on March 23 instead of Friday, according to District Education Officer Gopal Krishna Poudel.
Examinations of other subjects will take place as per the schedule. The board had earlier published the district level examination routine starting from March 13 to March 22.
Meanwhile, municipality-level school examinations scheduled to start on Thursday have been postponed for until further notice.
Bharatpur Municipality Level Examination Committee issued a notice about the postponement of the school examinations.
With the ongoing protests, the district-level school examinations scheduled to start from Friday too has become uncertain. A meeting of the examination board began Thursday morning in the district to discuss over the matter.
Funeral procession today
Meanwhile, agitating Tharu communities have scheduled the funeral procession of Kamal Chaudhari in the noon today. He was killed in a police firing b during the protests on March 5.
Chitwan chapter of Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha has said that the funeral procession will start after a condolence meet at Sauraha Chowk. The cremation will take place at Devghat shrine.
Vehicular movement to and from Chitwan district has been totally stopped since early morning on Thursday. Tikendra Chaudhary, Chairman of Chitwan chapter of Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha, said the organization is launching further effective protest programs.
With the formal talks between the government and Tharus ending inconclusively in the capital on Wednesday, the Tharus hit the streets in several Tarai districts, Thursday, making it the 11th straight day of protest.
