KATHMANDU, Nov 22: Apparently frustrated with life, a former Maoist combatant made a suicide attempt inside the home minister's office on Wednesday-- the day which marked the 12th anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA).
Sources at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) said that Kul Prasad Bhattarai, 32, of Kalikot, who entered Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa's office saying that he wanted to share his plights with the minister, consumed Metacid (Methyl Parathion) in the office at about 4 pm.
Comedy of errors
Bhattarai reportedly consumed the poison in the office after expressing his frustrations over the sluggish peace process, which he claimed had rendered him mentally unstable and ruined his life prospects.
Bhattarai also reportedly told the minister about the huge amount of loan he had taken after the conflict and his inability to pay back despite his efforts.
Officials at the home ministry said Bhattarai was immediately rushed to Bir Hospital for treatment. Bhattarai, who visited the minister's office repeatedly, had even tried to escape from the hospital.
However, Kiran Bhattarai, the press coordinator of the home minister, claimed that the former Maoist combatant was taken under control by the security personnel in the office immediately after he produced the poison from his pocket.
“He was taken to the hospital even before he could take the poison,” he said, “We are speculating that he had consumed the poison before he entered the office.”
