KATHMANDU, May 20: The Extreme Everest Expedition 2010 organized to clean up the slopes of Mt Everest has brought down 1,500 kilograms of garbage, said organizer Nepal Investment Bank Ltd on Thursday.

The expedition started on April 25. This project hopes to build a mountain of 2,000 kg garbage at the base camp.

“The campaign also encourages people across the globe to do more in response to environmental pollution” said Jyoti Pande, General Manager of NIBL.

According to Sopia L Pande, coordinator of the official Extreme Everest Expedition 2010-Documentary, the team has already collected 1,500 kilos of garbage. She also requested volunteers to help the team. The First International Mount Everest Day will be celebrated on May 29.

Several noble cleaning campaigns have been initiated to clean the mountains, yet none have attempted to clean the treacherous region above 8,000 meters which is also known as Death Zone.

Alongside the cleaning campaign, the team will spread awareness on environmental pollution, climate change and the urgent need to keep environment clean.
