EU countries concerned over recruitment in NA, Maoists

KATHMANDU, Aug 10: The EU countries, Norway and Switzerland, have expressed concern over the controversy surrounding recruitment in the Nepal Army and the Maoist army.



“A decision to do so by either side is unhelpful in moving forward with the final implementation of the peace process which is already dealing with a range of difficult issues,” said Embassy of Denmark in a statement on behalf of the local EC presidency.[break]

 

Nepal Army announced over 3,000 vacancies two weeks ago. Reacting to the move, Maoist army also announced recruitment of fresh combatants into its force.



The United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), which has been monitoring the peace process in Nepal, has denounced both the Maoists and Nepal army´s call for recruitment, saying such a move is the breach the peace process.



The EU countries have also stressed on a focused commitment to bring the peace process to a successful conclusion.



“We urge the parties to implement the CPA and the Agreement of the Monitoring of the Management of Arms and Armies (AMMAA) and use the available peace process mechanisms, particularly the JMCC, to bring quick closure to this matter,” the statement added.
