MAHENDRANAGAR, Dec 31: The lock at the Mid and Far-Western region branch of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) at Lalpur in Kanchanpur district was unlocked Wednesday evening.
It was opened after representatives from the local administration, NEA, political parties and agitating student organizations reached agreement in shortening the load shedding to 10 hours a week in Kanchanpur in two weeks. Currently, 40-hour a week load shedding is in place in the district.
The representatives agreed to import five megawatt (MW) electricity from Lohiyaghat Power House in Uttarakhanda, India after four days, particularly for Kanchanpur, according to Ashok Kumar Pundit, chief of the Mid and Far-Western Transmission Grid, Attariya. "The Indian side has invited us to finalize the five MW deal," he said.
Madhav Pant, chairman of All Nepal National Free Students´ Union (ANNFSU), threatened to resume the protests if the authorities failed in implement the agreement in the next two weeks.
Three student organizations -- Nepal Students´ Union, ANNFSU and ANNFSU-Sixth -- padlocked the NEA station on Monday demanding end of load shedding. It eventually paralyzed normal lives in the whole Mid and Far-Western regions for three days.
Newspapers, FM stations halt their services
Over three dozen daily newspapers and six FM stations based in Mid and Far Western regions were forced to halt their publications and broadcast owing to the disruption in power supply.
Sixteen dailies based in Kailali district could not come out since Tuesday due to extended power cut hours. Likewise, three dailies based in Dadeldhura, and two in Doti district also stopped their publications.
Likewise, Dinesh FM, Khaptad FM, Ghodaghodi FM, Tikapur FM, and Bhudhitola Station of state-run Radio Nepal, all based in Kailali district, could not come into operation following padlock at the NEA station.
