The constitutional body on Monday held its first discussion with the government secretaries and special class officers at its central office at Kantipath in the capital.
According to Election Commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung, the commission has begun discussion on the newly proposed code of conduct in order to seek suggestions and commitments from the stakeholders before approving it. [break]
Gurung said that they informed the bureaucrats about the preparations being made by the EC and sought support from the bureaucrats for holding upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) polls scheduled for November 19 successfully.
“We told the government secretaries that the EC will enforce new election code of conduct as it did in the last CA election and urged them to fully abide by it,” Gurung told Republica.
The top EC officials cautioned the government secretaries and special class officers to take decision on transfer, promotion and travel, among other activities of government secretaries only in consent of the constitutional body.
The EC has been working to enforce code of conduct of the new CA election, 120 days before polls date.
In response, the government secretaries and special class officers expressed their commitment to garner necessary support for conducting free and fair election.
According to EC Spokesman Bir Bahadur Rai, the commission is scheduled to hold discussion on the proposed code of conduct with political parties and the chairman of the Interim Election Council and its members on Tuesday.
A committee headed by Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav has already drafted two sets of code of conduct in view of the upcoming CA polls.
