KATHMANDU, March 29: The Department of Passports (DoP) has become the first government agency to receive ISO certification for quality management system. DoP is the central government agency that issues Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) in Nepal.

Speaking at a press meet on Friday, Acting Director General of DoP Yadav Khanal informed that DoP has received ISO 9001:2008 for quality management. [break]The standard is based on a number of quality management principles, including a strong customer focus, motivation and implication of top management, process approach and continual improvement.

DoP together with Oberthur Technologies had initiated process to secure ISO certification since July, 2012.

“We have been able to bag ISO standards as we met the standard set in the internal audit management,” said DoP Director Bishnu Gautam. DoP has so far distributed over 1 million passports since MRP was introduced in December, 2010. The standard certification is given after performing an internal audit in the concerned organization.

Managing Director Asia of Oberthur Technology Rosewell Wolff, who arrived in Kathmandu from Singapore, said it is a great achievement for DoP to receive ISO certification. “Implementation of personalization system in Nepal was a huge undertaking. This required new equipment, new training and a new set up,” he said. “This will prove to be a very big groundwork for introducing e-passports now.”

Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) Ram Adhar Singh lauded DoP for receiving ISO certification. “It is really a bold decision for a government agency in Nepal to take ISO certification. This is really appreciative of DoP,” he said.

India-based URS, which is the representative body of ISO for Nepal, had awarded DoP with the ISO 9001:2008 after conducting an internal audit management. “The NBSM has also started issuing ISO certification from Nepal since nearly two years ago,” said Singh.
