JANAKPUR, Jan 22: A dispute over the possession of a newborn boy child in Janakpur District Hospital was resolved after the publication of DNA report on Tuesday.

The report conducted by National Forensic Laboratory (NFL) in Lalitpur testified that the baby boy belonged to one Ranu Devi Mahato of Laxmipur VDC-8.[break]

Dispute had started after one Sangita Devi Sah of Khariyani VDC-5, Dhanusha and Ranu Devi Mahato claimed the child.

Both Sah and Mahato had given births at the hospital on January 13. Sah had given birth to a girl on her way to the hospital and on the same day Mahato had given birth to a boy at the same hospital. Dispute started after Sangita claimed that her child was exchanged with a girl.

The family members of Sah and Mahato even engaged in a brawl. When police were unable to settle the dispute, the hospital administration had sent blood samples of both the babies and the mothers to NFL in order to identify the real mothers.

The DNA report was made public in the presence of the Chief District Officer Hari Krishna Upadhaya, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital Dr Balram Mishra, Chairman of the Hospital Development Committee Kameshwar Jha, member of the Local Peace Committee Phul Kumari Mahato and mediapersons.

According to the report submitted by senior scientist Dinesh Kumar Jha of NFL, the possibility of Ranu giving birth to a baby boy is 99.9996 percent and the possibility of Sangita giving birth to a baby girl is 99.9996 percent.

Locals in hordes had reached Janakpur District Administration Office to hear the verdict as the issue had spread by word of mouth in Dhanusha and Mahotari districts.

After hearing the verdict, Sangita agreed to take care of the baby girl wholeheartedly. "I must have been confused because I heard someone congratulating me for a baby boy after I gave birth. I was very weak at that moment," said Sangita.
