Cool, classy and always on the lookout for fun, Varun has made a mark in some of the best nightclubs in India. And the man is here to weave magic into New Year’s Eve at “Sinners in Heaven” – the party at Hotel Yak & Yeti, on December 31.[break]
Republica caught up with the DJ, and here’s a snippet of the conversation that ensued.
Your introduction to the world of Djing?
As a child, I was always into music, and so continued into my college years. I used to go to discos with friends, and it was there I got my first introduction to Dj-ing, and the DJ console just took my breath away, fascinated me. I was regular at Club Tantra, one of the oldest and most famous clubs in Calcutta, and became good friends with the resident Dj there. You can call him my guru. I started with college parties, house parties and then slowly got into club scene.
Can Djing be a viable career move?
Yes, it can be a good career move. The money isn’t bad and it’s a fun job (smiles). With Djing, sky’s the limit. It all boils down to you, and how much of your time and passion can you invest. Another plus point is you can move into music production as well. As with everything in life, when you start, it’s difficult, it can test your patience. But you got to stick to what you love doing. Throw in a mix of hard work and passion, and the payoff will be well worth the efforts.
Has the fame of the MTV Roadies helped you, career-wise?
Yes, it has. So many people, clubs, and the media got to know me through it. And through the PR, I started getting lots of gigs. Traveling for me is the biggest perk, it’s the best.
Any genre you’re partial to?
I like Electronic Dance Music: Progressive, Electro, and House music.
What are your other interests?
I’m a big adrenaline junkie. Motorbikes give me rushes like no other. Bring it on! Cruising around on my bike is my favorite pastime. That’s why I participated in the MTV Roadies in the first place.
What’s in store for the Nepali crowd on New Year’s Eve? The music you’re going to churn?
Since its New Year’s Eve, everyone’s in a festive mood, we all want to dance and have fun. So I’ve got a bit of everything, from Electro to House to Hip Hop to commercial remixes. And to end the night, I have some unreleased progressive music! And yes, Kathmandu, you better come prepared. See you all on the dance floor at “Sinners in Heaven” this Friday.
