KATHMANDU, May 21: Most parts of Nepal are expected to receive above-average rainfall this year, according to the latest forecast from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).
In a report issued on Wednesday, the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) projected that both minimum and maximum temperatures across the country will also remain higher than average throughout the monsoon period, which spans from June 1 to June 28.
DHM forecasts heat wave in Terai, urges caution
The DHM prepared the forecast using data from the World Meteorological Organization's global and regional climate information centers, along with projections from the South Asian Seasonal Climate Outlook Forum.
While preparing the report, the MFD also evaluated several contributing factors, including the current status of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). It also took into account climate models, and snowfall and variability patterns observed during the past winter and pre-monsoon seasons in Europe and Asia.
For the 2081 BS monsoon season, the DHM had also predicted above-average rainfall in most regions—and now confirms that those areas did, in fact, experience higher-than-average downpour.
